War On ISIS: Defense Is Not a Winning Strategy

In the aftermath of the attack by two ISIS orcs on the Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest in Garland, Texas (source) news is emerging how close ISIS actually is to a major assault on the US.

Aug. 5, 2015 Lt. Col. Ralph Peters: What Will Happen If U.S. Continues Playing ‘Defense’ Against Islamic State.

Ralph Peters says what every sportsman, soldier and proper philosopher knows: defense is not a winning strategy!
Amid fresh revelations about the Islamic State threat from FBI Director James Comey, retired Lt. Col. Ralph Peters warned on Wednesday that the U.S. merely doesn’t have the resources to defend every single U.S. target from the terrorist group. The only way to win, he said, is to take the fight directly to the Islamic State. “You cannot win playing defense,” Peters said. “We just don’t have the resources to defend every possible target in the homeland at all times. You have to take the war to the enemy, and the place to kill them isn’t in Memphis, it’s not in St. Louis, Missouri, it’s not in Massachusetts. The place to defeat them, to kill them, to destroy them is the greater Middle East.” He added, “If you don’t go after them, they will certainly come after us.” Peters agreed the U.S. needs to destroy both Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, but are currently not aggressively going after either. “The Obama administration’s efforts have been largely cosmetic — some have made a slight difference. But they have been woefully and consistently inadequate to address the threat to the United States and to the world,” he said. (Source)

The Hidden Hand Behind Islamic State IS Revealed

It is now emerging what is the hidden hand behind the terror organzation with state building capabilities and the spy network reminiscent of East Germany's Stasi secret operators.

Nov 2, 2014 In June 2003, the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority of Iraq, banned the Iraqi Ba'ath party and all its members. This upset the fragile balance of power that existed in the Middle East.

After the story in the Washington Post, it's now Germany's Der Spiegel to come up with revelations about the Saddam Hussein origin of IS. But to jump to conclusions that the Syrian revolution against Assad was somehow democratic, or that Islam has nothing to do with the terror spree, is premature. The former Ba'athists involvement must be seen as simply jumping on a bandwaggon that was already in full force. But it does explain IS' success of IS' three pronged stategy: it's state building capacities, it's use of Stasi-like spy networks and the application of institutionalized terror.
Within IS, there are state structures, bureaucracy and authorities. But there is also a parallel command structure: elite units next to normal troops; additional commanders alongside nominal military head Omar al-Shishani; power brokers who transfer or demote provincial and town emirs or even make them disappear at will. Furthermore, decisions are not, as a rule, made in Shura Councils, nominally the highest decision-making body. Instead, they are being made by the "people who loosen and bind" (ahl al-hall wa-l-aqd), a clandestine circle whose name is taken from the Islam of medieval times. Islamic State is able to recognize all manner of internal revolts and stifle them. At the same time, the hermitic surveillance structure is also useful for the financial exploitation of its subjects. The air strikes flown by the US-led coalition may have destroyed the oil wells and refineries. But nobody is preventing the Caliphate's financial authorities from wringing money out of the millions of people who live in the regions under IS control -- in the form of new taxes and fees, or simply by confiscating property. IS, after all, knows everything from its spies and from the data it plundered from banks, land-registry offices and money-changing offices. It knows who owns which homes and which fields; it knows who owns many sheep or has lots of money. The subjects may be unhappy, but there is minimal room for them to organize, arm themselves and rebel. As the West's attention is primarily focused on the possibility of terrorist attacks, a different scenario has been underestimated: the approaching intra-Muslim war between Shiites and Sunnis. Such a conflict would allow IS to graduate from being a hated terror organization to a central power. Already today, the frontlines in Syria, Iraq and Yemen follow this confessional line, with Shiite Afghans fighting against Sunni Afghans in Syria and IS profiting in Iraq from the barbarism of brutal Shiite militias. Should this ancient Islam conflict continue to escalate, it could spill over into confessionally mixed states such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Lebanon. (Source)

The Root Origin of the Islamic State ISIS

The upheaval in the Middle East caused by ISIS can be reduced to the fight for hegemony over the region between Sunnis and Shia. That is not to say a gang of death cultists does not exist. But it has its proper place. It isn't the cause, but a weapon. There is a hand that moves IS. They must be seen as useful idiots rather than the movers themselves. The video and this story explain the roots. Here more about the Al Bu Nazir tribe of Saddam Hussein for more insight - H/t @AynRandFan
(...) Even with the influx of thousands of foreign fighters, almost all of the leaders of the Islamic State are former Iraqi officers, including the members of its shadowy military and security committees, and the majority of its emirs and princes, according to Iraqis, Syrians and analysts who study the group. They have brought to the organization the military expertise and some of the agendas of the former Baathists, as well as the smuggling networks developed to avoid sanctions in the 1990s and which now facilitate the Islamic State’s illicit oil trading. In Syria, local “emirs” are typically shadowed by a deputy who is Iraqi and makes the real decisions (...)
All the decision makers are Iraqi, and most of them are former Iraqi officers. The Iraqi officers are in command, and they make the tactics and the battle plans,” he said. “But the Iraqis themselves don’t fight. They put the foreign fighters on the front lines.” The public profile of the foreign jihadists frequently obscures the Islamic State’s roots in the bloody recent history of Iraq, its brutal excesses as much a symptom as a cause of the country’s woes.
The raw cruelty of Hussein’s Baathist regime, the disbandment of the Iraqi army after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, the subsequent insurgency and the marginalization of Sunni Iraqis by the Shiite-dominated government all are intertwined with the Islamic State’s ascent, said Hassan Hassan, a Dubai-based analyst and co-author of the book “ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror.” “A lot of people think of the Islamic State as a terrorist group, and it’s not useful,” Hassan said. “It is a terrorist group, but it is more than that. It is a homegrown Iraqi insurgency, and it is organic to Iraq.” (Source)

Funding Of IS Is Often A Pay Off, Not Sympathy

Where does the funding come from? The reason is not always well understood.

UPDATE: Fuad Hussein, the chief of staff of the Kurdish President, Massoud Barzani, told The Independent on Sunday: “There is sympathy for Da’esh [the Arabic acronym for IS, also known as Isis] in many Arab countries and this has translated into money – and that is a disaster.” He pointed out that until recently financial aid was being given more or less openly by Gulf states to the opposition in Syria – but by now most of these rebel groups have been absorbed into IS and Jabhat al-Nusra, the al-Qaeda affiliate, so it is they “who now have the money and the weapons”. Dr Mahmoud Othman, a veteran member of the Iraqi Kurdish leadership who recently retired from the Iraqi parliament, said there was a misunderstanding as to why Gulf countries paid off IS. It is not only that donors are supporters of IS, but that the movement “gets money from the Arab countries because they are afraid of it”, he says. “Gulf countries give money to Da’esh so that it promises not to carry out operations on their territory.”

Obama's False Narrative In the War On Islamic State

Retired General Jack Keane explains the lack of strategy and the false narrative that supports it. Obama's aim is a deal with Iran, not to defeat IS.

UPDATE: Iraqi security forces on Friday repelled an attack by Islamic State insurgents against an air base in Anbar province where U.S. Marines are training Iraqi troops, Iraqi and U.S. military officials said. Militants from the jihadist group had attacked the Ain al-Asad base and the nearby town of al-Baghdadi a day earlier, leading to sporadic clashes in the town overnight. Al-Baghdadi has been besieged for months by Islamic State, which captured swathes of northern and western Iraq last year, prompting a campaign of U.S.-led air strikes and the deployment of hundreds of U.S. military advisers to the country. A U.S. defence official said the Iraqi forces had stopped the attack and re-secured the facility. "Coalition forces were several kilometres from the attack and at no stage were they under direct threat from this action," the official said. (Source)

Obama Leaves Strategy Against IS To Next President

Obama Asks Congress For 3-Year War Authorization Against IS.

President Obama on Wednesday asked Congress for approval to formally wage war against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Obama’s proposal would limit the military authorization to three years and prohibit "enduring offensive combat operations,” an intentionally broad description. "If we are going to defeat this enemy, we need a comprehensive military strategy and a robust authorization, not one that limits our options," said Speaker John Boehner. "While I believe an AUMF against ISIL is important, I have concerns that the president’s request does not meet this standard," he added. By limiting the latest authorization to three years, Obama would essentially leave it to the next commander in chief to decide how best to fight the Islamic State. (Source)

Islamic State Downs Jordanian Fighter Jet

IS has shot down and captured a Jordanian fighter pilot this morning. It's not immediately clear what weapon was used. Initially they said having used anti-aircraft artillery, then it became anti-air missiles, only to be upgraded to laser guided anti-air missile and even heat seeking missiles. Anything can be expected it this point: the US has been training "moderate" rebels that have since joined IS, either officially or unofficially. And there's the war loot. Coalition planes are generally thought to fly too high to be in direct danger of MANPADS (Stingers).

SHOCK! IS Most Popular With Western Jihadists

Starling figures: if they are representative it means that the 'popular uprising' against Assad has no basis, at least among the media savvy. Note also that none of the critics opposed the Caliphate on principle; "one out of three (32.8%) criticises Isis for abusing Islam and using the faith as a cover for pursuing power and other “private” interests. Almost a third (29%) expressed horror about IS' violent methods and 17% had fears of the group’s hostility to religious and political freedoms. Nearly all of IS supporters – making up just over 20% of the 2m posts – championed the group for defending or unifying the Ummah. Only 8.3% were supportive of the group for being an enemy of the west.
Support for Islamic State (Isis) among Arabic-speaking social media users in Belgium, Britain, France and the US is greater than in the militant group’s heartlands of Syria and Iraq, a global analysis of over 2m Arabic-language online posts has found. In what is understood to be the first rigorous mass analysis of those for and against the world’s largest jihadist organisation, Italian academics found that in a three-and-a-half month period starting in July, content posted by Arabic-speaking Europeans on Twitter and Facebook was more favourable to Isis than content posted in those countries on the frontline of the conflict. In Syria, Isis appears to be dramatically losing the battle for hearts and minds... (Source)

Islamic State Protesting Bombings at the UN

You have to hand it to them! Islamic Statists do have chutzpah! Committing mass murder on an unprecedented scale, enslaving women and children, committing atrocities not seen since the Khmer Rouge's killing fields; and then having the cajones to go to the UN's International Criminal Court in The Hague to protest against Assad bombing the shit out of them in Raqqa! But it's no coincidence of course: the UN is IS' best friend. Having bought the gas attack as perpetrated by Assad as a justified cause for war, a plethora of countries making up the OIC, is also covertly supporting IS.

Here is some cultural evidence that Islamic State are the Nazis of our day: the glorification of  war and violence, the morality of pragmatism in which the aim justifies the means, the subjective group truth of polylogism, the collectivism of the Ummah and the grandiose sense of supremacy that justifies the slaughter of anyone deemed inferior. Sketches From Raqqa, Capital of the Caliphate

Na'eem Square by Molly Crabapple.

Vanity Fair has an interesting cultural topic, "Scenes from Daily Life in the de Facto Capital of ISIS". A anonymous source in Raqqa, the self appointed capital of the Islamic State, describes how the city has been transformed since it became the center of the Caliphate. The article is illustrated with sketches by Molly Crabapple.  We give you here just one of the city landmarks you may have seen on some of the more gory photo material that has transpired from the Caliphate, Na'eem Square.

Na’eem in Arabic means “paradise,” but ISIS changed this beautiful public place into the complete opposite. The square that was a favorite place for boys and girls to have dates, for little kids to play, and for the elders to relive their youths by taking in the activity of the city, is now the awful place of spikes upon which chopped-off heads are placed. The story of this square sums up the dark story of the whole city. In the drawing, damage appears on the fence due to the Assad regime’s airstrikes. Assad’s forces targeted it as a symbolic way of retaliating for the many times heads of soldiers from within its force were horrifically placed on the fence.

On Tuesday, his forces achieved their biggest coup in Iraq to date, seizing control of government buildings in Mosul, the country's third biggest city. Coming on top of similar operations in January that planted the black jihadi flag in the towns of Fallujah and Ramadi, it gives al-Qaeda control of large swathes of the north and west of the country, and poses the biggest security crisis since the US pull-out two years ago.
